If you’re in Davao City and craving a quick escape to nature, Hagimit Falls in Samal Island (IGACOS – Island Garden City of Samal) is a perfect destination. With its cool, cascading waters, lush surroundings, and serene atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot to relax and recharge. Plus, getting there is half the fun! Here’s a guide based on my own experience, sharing how to reach this little paradise and what else you can do while you’re in IGACOS.

Getting to Hagimit Falls from Davao City

Travel Time and Mode of Transportation

From Davao City, reaching Hagimit Falls takes a combination of land and sea travel, but don’t worry—it’s quite straightforward. Start by making your way to the Sasa Wharf. You can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or even a jeepney if you’re looking to save a bit of cash. However, since this was a family outing, we decided to bring our car for convenience.

Bringing Your Car

Driving to Sasa Wharf in our car made the trip even easier, especially with the kids in tow. Once at the pier, we had the option to take the car onto the ferry. You’ll need to buy a ferry ticket for your vehicle and passengers, which isn’t too pricey and saves the hassle of finding a ride on the island. The ferry ride to Babak Wharf takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It was quite relaxing to sit back and enjoy the gentle sway of the ferry, plus the kids loved the short boat ride.

From Babak Wharf to Hagimit Falls

Once we disembarked at Babak Wharf, it was a straightforward drive to Hagimit Falls. The roads are decent, and having our car made the journey comfortable. The drive took about 20 to 30 minutes, which was quite scenic, with lush greenery on either side. It felt like the perfect start to a day of nature and adventure.

Pro Tip: If you’re bringing your car, make sure to check the ferry schedules and be prepared for a little wait, especially on weekends or holidays when the queue can get longer.

Experiencing Hagimit Falls

What to Expect at the Falls

Hagimit Falls isn’t a single waterfall but a series of small cascades surrounded by dense greenery. The water is cool and refreshing, perfect for a dip after the journey. When we arrived, we were greeted by the soothing sound of rushing water and the sight of families and groups of friends enjoying their time together. There are several natural pools to choose from, so you can find a spot that suits your preference—whether it’s a shallow area for just dipping your feet or a deeper pool if you feel like swimming.

There are tables and cottages available for rent, ideal if you’re planning to have a picnic. We brought our snacks, but there were also local vendors selling food and drinks. Remember to keep the place clean and dispose of your trash properly to help maintain its natural beauty.

Activities to Do

  • Swimming: The crystal-clear waters of Hagimit Falls are perfect for swimming. Just take care of it, as some parts can be slippery. A pair of aqua shoes might be handy.
  • Photography: With its scenic beauty, Hagimit Falls is an Instagram-worthy spot. The sunlight filtering through the trees creates perfect lighting for photos.
  • Picnicking: If you’re visiting with family or friends, setting up a picnic near the falls is a relaxing way to spend your day.

More to Explore in IGACOS

Hagimit Falls is just the beginning of what Samal Island has to offer. If you have more time, here are some other spots worth visiting:

Island Garden Resort in Pangubatan

Located on the southwestern side of Samal Island, Island Garden Resort in Pangubatan is a hidden gem that offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. With its pristine beach, clear blue waters, and rustic charm, it’s a great place to unwind, swim, and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. The resort provides accommodations, and its beachside cabanas are perfect for a relaxing day by the sea.

Monfort Bat Cave

Just a short ride from Hagimit Falls, the Monfort Bat Cave is home to millions of fruit bats. It’s a unique sight to see and quite a learning experience, especially if you’re interested in wildlife conservation. The best time to visit is during the late afternoon when the bats start flying out in droves, creating an impressive natural spectacle.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort

For a more luxurious experience, head to Pearl Farm Beach Resort. It’s one of the most popular and upscale resorts on the island, known for its white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and top-notch amenities. Even if you’re not staying overnight, a day pass is available for visitors to enjoy its facilities.

Island Hopping

Island hopping is a must-do in IGACOS. Several boat tours are available that will take you to some of the best snorkeling spots around the island. My personal favorite was the Coral Garden, where the vibrant marine life and colorful corals make snorkeling an unforgettable experience. Remember to bring your snorkeling gear or rent it from one of the local shops.

Vanishing Island

If you’re looking for something a bit more offbeat, visit Vanishing Island. This sandbar only appears during low tide, offering a unique experience of walking on a strip of sand in the middle of the sea. It’s a perfect spot for taking photos or just relaxing with your feet in the water.

Tips for Visiting Hagimit Falls and IGACOS

  • Bring Cash: While there are some ATMs on the island, it’s best to bring cash with you, as many places do not accept credit cards.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothes: Lightweight, quick-drying clothes and comfortable footwear are ideal, especially if you plan to do a lot of exploring.
  • Stay Hydrated: The tropical climate can be quite hot, so bring plenty of water to keep hydrated throughout the day.
  • Respect the Environment: IGACOS is beautiful, so let’s keep it that way. Be mindful of your waste, avoid using single-use plastics, and respect the wildlife.

Visiting Hagimit Falls and exploring IGACOS offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of Davao City. Whether you’re in for the thrill of discovering hidden waterfalls, lounging on pristine beaches, or encountering unique wildlife, IGACOS has something for everyone.
